Women We Admire: Sara Blakely

Hello Sparkle Sisters and Color Queens,

Welcome to the first feature of our exciting new blog series: Women We Admire! Each week, we will celebrate incredible women who inspire us with their confidence, beauty, and empowerment. Today, we are kicking off with an extraordinary entrepreneur who revolutionized the fashion industry—Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx.

The Journey of Sara Blakely

Sara Blakely's story is one of determination, innovation, and resilience. Born in Clearwater, Florida, Sara's journey to success was not a straight path. After graduating from Florida State University with a degree in communications, she initially wanted to pursue a career in law but didn't score well on the LSAT. Instead, she found herself selling fax machines door-to-door, a job that required perseverance and a thick skin.

Despite the challenges, Sara's entrepreneurial spirit was ignited. In 1998, while getting ready for a party, she found herself frustrated with the appearance of her white pants. She wanted a smoother look but didn't have the right undergarments. With a pair of scissors, she cut the feet off her pantyhose, and the idea for Spanx was born.

From Idea to Empire

Sara spent the next two years developing her idea. She invested her savings of $5,000, researched hosiery patents, and worked on prototypes. Despite having no background in fashion or business, she was determined to bring her vision to life. Her tenacity paid off when she convinced a manufacturer in North Carolina to produce her product, and soon after, she secured a meeting with Neiman Marcus, where she famously demonstrated her product in the bathroom to show its effectiveness.

Spanx launched in 2000 and quickly became a sensation. The brand's innovative shapewear empowered women to feel more confident in their clothes, and Sara's unique approach to marketing and branding set Spanx apart in a crowded market.

Empowering Women Everywhere

Sara Blakely's impact goes beyond shapewear. She has used her success to empower other women through philanthropy and mentorship. In 2013, she became the first female billionaire to join the Giving Pledge, committing to donate half of her wealth to charity. She has also launched the Sara Blakely Foundation, which supports women’s education and entrepreneurial endeavors globally.
